Students at Silver Lake Elementary School in Silver Lake, Ohio were delighted to receive Twizzlers candy from CF Extrusion Technologies at the school’s annual career fair on Thursday, September. 26, 2019. Twizzlers were more than a treat; the candy also served to illustrate the kinds of everyday products produced by the cold-feed extrusion process.
Representatives from CF Extrusion Technologies demonstrated the concept of cold-feed extrusion using Play-Doh Fun Factory toys, explaining that manufacturing extruders are like overgrown Play-Doh machines. In addition to seeing how the extrusion process works, students also learned about the kinds of products manufactured through cold-feed extrusion and the education required to work in the field, including strong speaking and presentation skills.
Students appreciated the chance to learn about the manufacturing process of many of the items they use every day. “One student made us a placemat as a gift for coming to the school,” said Shannon Davidson, vice president of sales and operations. “He had drawn a picture of an extruder based on the one he saw pictured on our website.”
The gymnasium at Silver Lake Elementary was set up like a trade show, and about a dozen local businesses participated. Equipped with notebooks and pens, the fourth- and fifth-grade students moved from booth to booth in groups of ten, and each business delivered a career talk about their field lasting about ten minutes each.
